Abstract or Additional Information

A fundamental theorem of Chevalley asserts that every connected algebraic group is an extension of an abelian variety by a connected linear algebraic group. The talk will present this result (and explain the ingredients of its statement), and then survey some recent developments on the structure of algebraic groups and geometric applications.
