My recent work, in collaboration with Bryce McLeod, of our department, and David Kinderlehrer, of Carnegie Mellon University, concerns motion of intracellular material via diffusion and transport processes. The main issue has been conditions on the potentials and species interaction terms, which imply that transport occurs. It had been recognized previously that some sort of vaguely defined asymmetry was necessary to obtain transport. This has now been given a specific formulation, in such a way as to imply transport if the appropriate interactions between species are also present.
