Abstract or Additional Information
Dan was the first data analyst hired by the Pirates is the most-tenured member of their analytics team. A former Baseball Prospectus columnist and author of five books, Dan's work led to the Pirates' early surge in using "the Shift" on defense (see http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/40501/how-the-pirates-got-defensive, Tribune-Review article here) and finding talent that was under-vauled on the market. Dan will show some of the analytics his team does including how to use optimization techniques to form a batting lineup. This is a talk you will not want to miss.
Note: the talk is 4:30-5:30 in room 548 of the William Pitt Union. Refreshments will be served.
