A vibrant center of mathematics research, training and study
Welcome to the Web page of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh. As mentioned in our mission statement, the department is committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate training as well as in research and scholarship in pure and applied mathematics. Our faculty conduct active research in a broad range of areas, from algebra, analysis, geometry, PDEs, and topology, to mathematical biology and mathematical finance, to numerical analysis and scientific computing. We value the contributions of our postdoctoral fellows and students, who play important roles in our research and receive broad, thorough training and professional development support.
Many activities take place in our department, as you can find described on these pages. During the academic year we hold a weekly department colloquium and many research seminars. We have an active Undergraduate Math Club, SIAM Chapter, AWM Chapter, Actuarial Club, and Putnam Seminar. Undergraduates have access to a wide range of courses and can complete majors in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Actuarial Mathematics, Mathematical Biology, Data Science and Mathematics-Economics or a minor in Mathematics. In addition to the Putnam Exam, students have extracurricular opportunities to compete in the Mathematical Competition in Modeling and the Annual Integration Bee, and we encourage participation in summer and study abroad opportunities.
Please don’t hesitate to contact our department if you have any questions about mathematics or the mathematical sciences. Last but not least, be sure to visit our alumni page and keep in touch!
Best wishes,
Chair, Department of Mathematics
