Graduate Student Fellowships
- Congratulations to Tian Jing and Shuxian Xu! Both were awarded the Andrew Mellon Predoctoral Fellowship, given to doctoral students of exceptional promise and ability across the disciplines within The Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences.
- Tian Jing is a sixth-year graduate student. His work focuses on the theory of partial differential equations, which includes the existence theory of weak and strong solutions, as well as the uniqueness theory of them. “The Mellon Fellowship provides a great chance for me to concentrate on my research projects,” Tian said. “This great honor strengthens my confidence in research and encourages me to achieve success in my future career.”
- Shuxian Xu is a fifth-year PhD student working on numerical analysis, especially in finite element method. “My work predicts fluid motion, attacks chaos, understands turbulence and resolves complexity,” Shuxian said. The Mellon Fellowship gives her more time to do research and learn more in other areas.
- Congratulations also to Asia Parker! Asia was the recipient of the Whittington Fellowship, which is awarded to women starting their doctoral studies in disciplines where women have been traditionally underrepresented and who demonstrate exceptional ability and outstanding research promise, with preference given to residents of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This prestigious fellowship carries a three-term stipend and a tuition scholarship. Fellows are co-mentored by advanced graduate students and faculty members. A first-year PhD student in the Department of Mathematics, Parker says she is “eager to conduct research in the fields of relativity theory, topology, and differential geometry.” Outside of her studies she enjoys reading, making chainmail, and hanging out with her graduate cohorts. Parker says the Whittington Fellowship has enabled her to prioritize her mathematics education and acclimatize to this new level of study. “This has also allowed me to acquire a new method of study, as well as a deeper appreciation for mathematical discourse,” she said. “I am extremely grateful for this fellowship, and I will continue to strive for excellence.”
