Abstract or Additional Information
Correlated activity in the central nervous system is seen ubiquitously but its role in neural coding remains controversial. Here we will present recent results obtained in the electrosensory system of weakly electric fish showing that correlated but not single neuron activity can provide reliable information about natural stimuli thereby leading to perception and behavior. The mechanisms underlying this coding are generic and are thus expected to be generally applicable.
